Liposuction

For decades, people have applied various ways to improve their physical appearance. Although diet, excercise and a flattering fashion favors our look, sometimes stubborn, unsightly bulges remain. In women, those fat deposits occur most frequently from the waist down, on hips, buttocks and outer thighs (saddlebags). Fat deposits on men tend to accumulate above the waist (love handles). Liposuction is a modern technique that involves the removal of fat cells from the body and may be used alone or in conjuntion with other procedures such as facelift or "tummy tuck". It is carried out on specific areas of the body that requires this relatively safe and simple technique. When excercise, diet have failed, liposuction is a last resort solution.

Lipsuction is a treatment to diminish excess fat at a certain area of the body but it is not designed to correct general obesity. Such areas may include chin, neck, jowls, cheeks, arms, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, knees, hips and abdomen. Men with enlarged breast (gynecomastia) can benefit from technique. Men and women who are in good physical condition with good skin elasticity are the best candidates for this procedure. In its humble beginnings, liposuction was offered to younger people; however, recent improvements in this technique have made it possible to treat patients of all age groups. Each person who seeks this option must be initially assessed on an individual basis. Only your plastic surgeon can determine if he or she is a suitable candidate for liposuction surgery.

Liposuction surgery can usually be performed in the physicians office, outpatient facility or hospital. The procedure can be done under general anesthesia (patient is asleep) or local anesthesia while the patient remains awake. Premedication is administered to help relax the patient. The qualified plastic surgeon injects a large amount of diluted local anesthesia solution into the area (tumescent procedure). This procedure reduces bruising and pain at that area. The physician makes a small incision into which he or she inserts a tube (cannula) either attached to a high pressure vaccum suction or a large syringe. The fat is loosened back from the surrounding tissue by moving the tube back and forth and is then suction from the body through the vaccum device. Your plastic surgeons determines the amount of fat to remove by feeling and pinching the tissue. Some physicians apply ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL). Sound waves at the tip of the cannula will emulsify or liquify fat when it come in contact with fat cells. Additional risks such as burns have been noted and its long-term effects are still unknown.
